Supporting EAL Learners
English as an Additional Language
Hethersett Woodside Primary and Nursery School is a diverse school and we are proud to welcome families from all over the world and value the multicultural nature of our school community. We currently have 30 different languages different to English spoken in our school by around 104 pupils.Â
‘EAL’ stands for English as an additional language and refers to pupils who are exposed to a language at home that is known or believed to be other than English. Children with EAL will have varying levels of proficiency in English, depending on their exposure and support, ranging from children learning to speak their first English words, to those who speak English fluently.Â
Our EAL lead closely monitors the progress of each EAL learner in the curriculum and in their acquisition of English. This is assessed using the Bell Foundation assessment framework. We help our pupils in their learning by offering visuals and intervention support to boost vocabulary and communication.
As a school we have access to a translation service called ‘Language Line’ where interpreters can translate school messages into a range of languages. If you think that this service could improve our communication with you, please contact the school.
We are a School of Sanctuary and committed to creating a culture of welcome, understanding and belonging for those forced to flee.
