Vision Statement
At Hethersett Woodside Primary and Nursery, our core value of respect shines through our Geography curriculum, developing pupils’ respect for their local, national and global environment. To achieve this we explore a diverse range of places, people and environments to enhance the curiosity of our children in our ever-changing world.
Learning to make sense of the world as young geographers will enable our children to be active and responsible citizens who can help to shape a sustainable future both locally and globally. Furthermore, some of our children may go on to use these skills in the workplaces of architects, conservationists, renewable energy engineers and environmental risk assessors.
We follow the CUSP (Curriculum Unity Schools Partnership) geography curriculum which is built around the principles of evidence-based practice. The curriculum is ambitious and our children are challenged to build their skills and understanding of locational knowledge, place knowledge and concepts of human and physical geography. Fieldwork is woven throughout the opportunities that our curriculum provides and it is used to enhance and support learning on both local and global scales.
We aim for our students to leave us keen and ready to continue their journey through geography with a strong understanding of the subject’s diversity and its powerful potential to achieve understanding and change.

Achievements
Year 1: Excellent work identifying the countries of the United Kingdom and matching them with their flags. They even challenged themselves to order the countries from smallest to largest! The presentation is lovely—well done.
Year 2: Fantastic work identifying the 7 continents and exploring whether they border one another. The presentation is beautiful, and the careful attention to spelling makes this piece extra special. Well done!
Year 4: An outstanding explanation of lines of longitude, demonstrating a clear understanding of key concepts. The use of precise vocabulary, including terms such as ‘prime meridian,’ ‘Greenwich,’ and ‘western hemisphere,’ is exceptional. This work is well thought out and presented beautifully!
Year 6: An excellent piece of work demonstrating a thorough explanation of prior knowledge about tectonic movements, followed by a detailed account of what causes earthquakes and their effects. The careful labelling of essential items needed during an evacuation due to an earthquake shows thoughtful consideration and understanding. The presentation is impressive, with clear attention to detail and care taken throughout. Well done on such an outstanding effort!
