Vision Statement
At Hethersett Woodside, we believe that art is a fundamental aspect of a child’s development and education. Our Art curriculum aims to ignite creativity, foster self-expression, and build a deep, holistic understanding of artistic methods and principles. By ensuring the delivery of diverse art techniques and encouraging reflective practices, we prepare the children to appreciate and contribute to the world of art.
By choosing Access Art as our curriculum basis, we introduce students to a broad range of artistic styles and techniques; including drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital arts. This exposure helps students:
- Develop fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination through activities like sketching and sculpting.
- Enhance problem-solving abilities and critical thinking by experimenting with various materials and artistic processes.
- Have an appreciation for diverse, worldwide cultural artistic traditions and therefore, support global awareness and empathy.
Our curriculum is designed to build on students’ existing skills as they progress. Early years focus on basics like colour and shape, while later stages introduce more advanced concepts such as perspective, shading, proportion, and abstract art; gradually developing their own artistic style and understanding. This scaffolded approach ensures that students are not only revisiting but also deepening their knowledge and skills whilst creating a strong foundation for their artistic growth.
Sketchbooks are an essential tool in our school, serving as both a creative space and a reflective journal. The regular sketchbook use helps students track their progress, understand their personal artistic development, and refine their skills over time. It also supports the habit of self-reflection and encourages students to take ownership of their creative process.
Our Art curriculum is dedicated to offering a diverse and supportive education where all children are given the opportunity and the tools to become confident, empowered and imaginative young artists.

Achievements
In the 23/24 summer term we created an art gallery for parents and children to attend. Children chose their favourite pieces from throughout the year to exhibit alongside artwork linked to the Sacred Arts RE competition.
