Music

Vision Statement

At Hethersett Woodside, we aim to inspire our pupils to develop a lifelong love of music that will enrich their lives, as well as their talent as musicians that they can take further into a career or as a recreational interest. We aspire to increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement through regular fun engaging musical activity. We want our pupils to sing and to play instruments musically and to understand music through exploring, improvising, composing, performing, listening and appraising. They will play their part in an ensemble and enjoy performing to audiences.

The school values of ‘respect, responsibility and resilience’ are prevalent in the teaching and learning of music. Alongside developing and improving their specific musical skills and capabilities, our children will develop a range of interpersonal skills such as teamwork, problem solving, leadership and communication skills.

We use ‘Charanga’ as our core scheme of work as it provides an integrated, practical, exploratory and child-led approach to musical learning. During class lessons, children participate in active music-making both through singing and playing glockenspiels and recorders. In KS2, pupils are invited to bring along other instruments they are learning, to play in their class ensemble. We further enhance our curriculum and musical offer in school through ‘Sing Up’.

At Woodside, pupils have the opportunity to learn to play musical instruments with specialist teachers. We offer ukulele, violin, cello, viola, flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, piano, guitar and drums tutoring. There are choirs for KS1 and KS2 pupils. Our intention is to develop a school orchestra of our own, and to sign post pupils to groups and ensembles in the community when they are ready.

Inviting musical members of the community to perform and work with our children will help to instil our musical vision for the pupils of Woodside.
