Vision Statement
At Hethersett Woodside Primary School, we want to inspire children to develop a love of learning about other languages and cultures whilst providing a wider understanding of the world. We aim for our children:
- to appreciate the rich diversity between cultures in our community, the UK and wider world;
- to develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages;
- to find them enjoyable and stimulating.
Learning a second language will also offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences.
Children are taught Spanish in Years 3 and 4, and French in Years 5 and 6. We use ‘Language Angels’ as our scheme of work to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils. The resources are updated regularly to ensure we are in line with meeting and exceeding national requirements.
The four key language learning skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across the primary phase. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning and also helping the children improve overall attainment in other subject areas. Learning a foreign language compliments our wider curriculum commitment to promote respect and understanding for diversity. Our staff are passionate about including a global dimension in all teaching and learning at Hethersett Woodside, and the teaching and learning of the Spanish and French languages and cultures provides the children with a fantastic opportunity to do so.
